Smalls
I spotted the tiniest monarch caterpillars on one of the milkweed varieties in the circle garden. It’s late in the season. I don’t know what will happen to this one, but I wish it well.
I also visited the scarlet runner beans. They are planted in an awkward spot, through the squash jungle, but I wanted to see how they were doing. As expected, I saw a hummingbird. They love the runner bean flowers. This one was happy to rest on this tendril for quite a while. Usually they are flitting about madly. I could even see her flicking her tongue in and out.
Gosh I’ve never gotten that close to a hummingbird and you’re right … they never do seem to sit still
It was unusual to see this one taking a rest! She deserved it, I’m sure.
How delightful! The hummingbird perched on a scarlet runner bean vine is a familiar sight in our garden, too. They also love the foxglove and crocosmia (montbretia) flowers. I wish the little monarch caterpillar much good luck.
It makes me so happy to provide the insects and birds with plants they like. How great you have a garden!
Such a wonderful photo of the hummingbird, with the light through the leaves. They are indeed hard to capture in. a still pose!!
I was very surprised that this hummingbird stayed still so long for photos!
I just remembered that we saw a teeny caterpillar on our walk yesterday 🙂
