Sketch journal March 2023
I sketched a lot of rocks. There are a lot of rocks here, so a readily available subject. This drawing shows snow on the rocks – that black and white contrast that I really enjoy.
A few times when I was really at a loss for what to draw, I looked at the Instagram account of __nitch. I could usually find a celebrity photo to use as a model.
This one took the thumbnails concept a bit further. I don’t remember doing this, but it involved a painting with sumi ink on white paper. Then cutting out squares and pasting them in the grid format. I am attached to squares in the fabric world too.
Marsha Boston is a watercolorist whose work I like. My neighbor paints watercolors and we paint together sometimes. I need to have something to paint, so I’ve been looking for watercolor paintings I can copy. I like her forms, very plantlike.
This is another grid, but scrambled. Fun. It is also an example of rule based composition. The rule here was that each square had to contain a Circle and a Line. (One contains two lines, but maybe it’s just one thick line.) Now that I look at this, it’s an approach that could be applied to quilting or embroidery.
What fun to see your sketches and I am impressed with your commitment to a daily practice. I especially like the thumbnails, so many possibilities there. I did the Ann Wood stitchbook 100 days project last year and am considering doing it again. (It starts on Jan. 19th. )
I really see a benefit to committing to a project over a long-term. It cuts out some of the wishy-washy preferences that can bog me down. Maybe it’s a holdover from my working days though – do I need some external motivation to produce when I could just do whatever I like?
love the scrambled grid, of course! ha.
scrambled, always good!
Okay…so what is the shape above the rocks? I really like the rocks. Quite realistic looking. The ‘Jack” is the same face of the guy who rear ended me and then kept going! haha ???? Lucky you for having the possibility of a water color buddy and I liked Marsha Boston’s paints also. It seems like a grid or thumbnails could inspire a lot of art making!
The shape above the rocks is supposed to be the side of a building. I would rather just have the rocks alone on that page, but the sketch journal is for learning, right?
