A Fiery hike
Four of us hiked up Fiery Mountain today. It’s a little mountain across the pond from our camp. According to the Internet, it is 557 feet (170 meters) in height. Another site says 466 feet. In either case, not that tall! But beloved and beautiful. Especially in a little light snowfall.
One of my favorite features is the giant boulder, a prime example of a glacial erratic.
Another favorite feature is the healthy growth of reindeer moss. It looks like cauliflower in the photo! If stepped on, it crumbles but these clusters look undisturbed.
Sometimes the plants look manicured like a master gardener was at work.
The trail had wet and muddy sections both going up and coming down. But navigable.
I was really relating to the many boulders we passed, such stalwart beings.
That reindeer moss is really pretty. All of those giant boulders are amazing. I love coming across them when I do, not too often though sadly. Sooooo…love seeing yours!
There are a few really huge giant boulders around here. A lot of rocks in general. I love rocks.
Holding deep meaning, your place of giant boulders., how heart warming to walk alongside you via you photos.
Years ago, I spent a weekend with grace, when she lived in New Mexico. We were going to do some natural dyeing, hang out, visit some people and a couple of places and she especially wanted to take me to one of her favorite places, Water Canyon, near the town of Magdalena. Since I knew I would be moved by seeing this place, I packed an offering to leave at Water Canyon. It was a little pouch filled with some of the native American corn kernels from the corn that I had grown, blue and red kernels. My plan was that when I found a spot that called to me, I would tie the little pouch to a tree branch and let birds peck away at it to release the corn.
We walked and talked and laughed and just took deep breaths AND then I saw it; a massive boulder I called Ancient Mother.. I put my body against the boulder, hugged it, letting myself go slack so as to fully feel the boulder against my body and in doing so, I heard a hum…an earth song that filled me with spirit…now normally, I would dance in that moment but it felt too sacred to do anything but hold myself still…
That is a beautiful story, Marti. I’ll have to spend more time with the boulder on Fiery. Maybe in the summer when it’s warmer.
This…and then Marti’s words of memory….’
living among these ancient Earth Spirits….among them….
Ancient earth spirits, yes. They have a special knowing quality, being so old.
Absolutely beautiful ..
I thought so! Could have taken a lot more photos, but these give a taste.
this brought to mind boulders I have known and loved on the terminal moraine that is Shelter Island, NY
If I ever go back to Shelter Island, I’ll search out boulders. It’s a special place.
