Revealing
The light snow that fell emphasizes the stillness of today. It sits quietly on everything.
The pea trellis shows off its folds and turns. It’s tall, taller than I can reach, and the fencing at the top can’t be easily adjusted. It does what it wants to do.
The tansy I let grow in the front garden holds little clumps of snow supported by its seedhead clusters.
Each one of the monarda heads wears a hat of snow.
This plant – what is it? The snow or maybe the ice has changed its form. Now it bends gracefully and the clusters look like little bunches of grapes.
Inside, I’m looking at a mending project. I made this quilt very quickly and soon after we moved to Maine. I’m surprised that it is already wearing out at certain spots. This silver duppioni silk that seemed so attractive is not very sturdy. It’s worn to shreds, exposing the interior.
The interior: I took apart an old quilt made by my mother out of corduroy squares. The back was shredding in places, the batting was disintegrating, but the top was still useable. I decided to use it in the center of this quilt. It makes a very heavy blanket. I meant to come back and do more stitching through all three layers, but I haven’t done that yet. Maybe now? Maybe the shifting of the layers is causing extra wear. We used it as a cloth to cover the couch, so it was getting a lot of abrasion from our sitting and lying down.
I’m not really sure what to do. I need to replace this nine-patch, I think. The decorative machine stitching across the top is due to rushing to finish it. Rushing. No need to rush now, there is another covering on the couch at the moment and I can take my time with this.
A beautifully loved and worn quilt. Your snow sculptures are amazing!
It is loved, for sure. I hope the repair is as loveable!
I could fairly “taste” the scent of new-fallen snow and hear the hush of it … thank you for triggering good memories with your pictures
as for mending … I have a patchplay handbag that I use all the time, much of it made with vintage linen that is shredding much like your silk … it will take some doing, to find cloth sturdy enough to wear better without stressing the cloth that’s already in place … and some of the seams are, well, coming apart at the seams … ha!
the patterned cloth in your 9-patch reminds me that I have some printed batik-style cotton that was gifted to me last year … hmmm, that might work
I’m glad you liked the snow pix. Today it’s melting in the sunshine. It’s a challenge to find sturdy enough cloth that will work with the overall look of the quilt. I have some seams to restitch too. Good luck with your handbag!
