Schoodic cycling
Yesterday morning, we took an excursion with the bicycles to the Schoodic Point side of Acadia. I’ve taken brief walks on the bike trails there, but never bicycled them. Many years ago, we rode around the point on the loop road. A memorable ride including a bald eagle.
This time, I wanted to explore the bike trails. It was a very enjoyable ride. Sam struggled more because he doesn’t have an e-bike. It was just pedal power for him. The trails are gravel, so we had to try to stay on the more packed part of the track. And had to walk up a few very steep hills. But my e-bike is just perfect for me and I had a great time.
We started at Frazer Point (upper left on the map marked “You are here”) and biked southeast across the peninsula to the Wonsqueak Harbor area, where I took some photos. Here the road turns to one-way (red vs. gray on the map). We wanted to bike around the point on the road, but we were facing the wrong way on the one-way. Note for next time: start from the right side. We chose to bike along the road to the Bunker’s Wharf parking lot and then rode back across the peninsula on the twisty, hilly trail across the top of the park. We ended up on the road and rode south back to the car. A satisfying loop of 8+ miles.
When we got home, I looked for an app that would help me identify distant mountain peaks (they are hills around here, really). I found one called Peak Finder. I think I will enjoy it. There were some knobs visible in the distance on this ride and I really want to get to know this area better.
