I love following the National Park Service on Instagram (@nationalparkservice) … they have a wry wordsmith who makes the stunning pictures from various national parks into wonderful word plays … and then goes on to explain the science … yesterday it was ice balls on Lake Michigan, which isn’t salt water, but standing on the edge of it one could imagine being at the ocean … anyway, the post went on to explain how the movement of the water would break off a pieces of ice shelf, which then got rolled around and around, forming huge spheres of ice … fascinating … and now I wonder if that ever happens on ocean beaches
I should learn more about it, because it is fascinating. There is a phenomenon called ice disks where large round disks are formed as water freezes in eddies, mainly streams I guess. I will look into that instagram account.
finally a thaw here
Today and last night, we’ve had big wind and warmer temps. Lots of melting going on. I might even be able to go to the compost without grippers!
