Pastoral
Michael Kelleher
Ecopoetics 1 page 57
This is an enjoyable piece. It doesn’t torture me by raising questions, other than a desire to read up on the meaning of “pastoral.” I can read this poem and enjoy the ironic humor, the poem’s leaps and turns. It starts out with the convention of “pastoral” and moves very quickly toward a much more modern meditation.
The last phrase seems very resonant to me of our whole human dilemma:
wondering
What in the world he did that was so wrong.
Michael Kelleher has an ongoing multi-year blog project called Aimless Reading at Pearlblossom Highway. He is posting an entry about every one of his books. I enjoy this type of extended effort. It is an aspect of that ecobuzzword “sustainability.” There is a very valuable energy at work in sustained effort.
