notes from baja – todos santos
Arrive at Todos Santos, March 16
Plan A, meet relatives here at La ARCA
•
Walking the streets, find La ARCA, no relatives. Sit on the patio, not listening to the dharma talk, not meditating, watching birds, flowers, listening to the fountain. Say something to Alvino Colandres and try to connect with Robert Hall, but nothing happening there.
•
Another taco place – Pueblo Magico – pulls us in off the street. Very wonderful tacos of smoked marlin with green olives and a glass of tamarindo. Sam chats with the chef. I use the restroom and photograph the masks on the patio wall. This place should be busier.
•
We go into a few shops including one jam-packed with artifacts. Two or three tiny rooms, one non-functional bathroom. A gallery, turquoise. Another shop, open to the outdoors, palm roof, ceramics everywhere.
•
Palm Sunday
People making palm crosses here where palms grow and later, a procession.
•
Coffee at Café Brown – actually, a mango smoothie and a chai latté – where it is comfortably familiar.
•
No relatives.
•
A little bookstore. More shops. We don’t buy anything. Gabo’s gallery is closed – back at “Noon.” Which day?
