dark eyes shadowed wry but
celebrating smile – ironic outlook tinged
with hints of tragedy about
which I knew nothing – back
pain? illness? an ex-nun’s spiritual
malaise? or surrendering to the
constant undertow of tragedy in
native life? don’t know, I
never asked you Stimus spuse?
(what is in your heart?)

“Stimus spuse?” In many of the Colville Indian languages this phrase means “What is in your heart?” It’s a greeting, an encouragement, a reminder to have the right focus.
